Houston daycare inspection records, explained
Every regulated daycare in Texas gets a state record: inspections, investigations, and each rule it was cited for breaking. We organize those records for the 1,468 daycares with a Houston address, so you can see in one place how often a daycare was cited, how serious the state considers each rule, whether the same rule keeps coming up, and what to ask on a tour.
- 1,468Houston daycares
- 11,509Routine inspections, 5 yrs

What each daycare record shows
- Violations by the state’s risk weight. Texas weights every rule High, Medium High, Medium, Medium Low or Low. In Houston, 22% of recent violations were under High-weight rules.
- Repeat issues. Rules cited more than once at the same daycare, with the most recent date.
- Year-by-year trend and every state visit, including inspections that found nothing.
- The state’s own words for each violation, how it was corrected, and a plain-English summary of the rule.
- Questions to ask on a visit, matched to the kinds of rules the daycare was cited for.
Home daycares are included
545 of the Houston operations are child care homes run in the caregiver’s own residence: 103 licensed child care homes, 355 registered child care homes, and 87 listed family homes. The state does not inspect listed family homes routinely, so 80 of them have no inspection on record; we label them “Not routinely inspected” instead of treating them as clean.
The rule cited most in Houston
746.3407 (cleaning and upkeep of the building, grounds, and equipment) was cited 602 times at 320 Houston daycares in the last five years. See the 150 most-cited rules, explained.
How we check the data
The records come straight from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission’s public data files. Before each update we check that nothing is missing or mislinked, and we compare our counts with the state’s own totals for every daycare. We do not rate daycares. Read the full method.
